Two different jobs — biro vs permanent marker
Regular pen ink and permanent marker (Sharpie and the like) behave differently, and it's worth knowing which one you're dealing with. Biro ink is usually a bit easier — often a wash with rubbing alcohol lifts it fairly readily. Permanent marker lives up to its name and is genuinely tougher, because it's formulated to resist exactly the kind of removal you're trying to do. Both respond to the same core method though: alcohol-based solvents.
Step-by-step for fresh ink or marker
- Place the stained area face-down on a stack of paper towels or a clean rag — this lets the ink transfer out and down rather than spreading further as you work on it.
- Saturate a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl works well) and dab, don't wipe, working from the outside edge of the stain inward so you're not spreading it wider.
- Replace the paper towel underneath as it picks up ink, so you're always transferring onto a clean surface.
- Keep dabbing until no more colour transfers. This can take a genuine bit of patience with permanent marker — don't expect it gone in thirty seconds.
- Rinse the alcohol out completely, then treat with regular detergent before washing in the warmest water the fabric's care label allows.
Alternative — cheap hairspray for synthetics
An old trick that still holds up: cheap aerosol hairspray has a high alcohol content and works particularly well on synthetic and poly-blend fabric, especially thicker, tougher weaves. Spray it liberally over the stain, let it sit around 15 minutes, then blot repeatedly with a clean cloth. Rinse thoroughly and wash as normal afterwards. Worth noting this works because of the alcohol content specifically, not some magic hairspray ingredient — modern "alcohol-free" hairsprays won't do much here.
What not to do
- Don't wipe side to side across the stain — you'll smear it into a much bigger mess than you started with.
- Don't wash the item before treating the stain — a hot wash cycle on untreated ink can set it permanently in one go.
- Don't use acetone-based nail polish remover on synthetic fabric — it can actually dissolve some synthetic fibres, not just the ink.
- Don't dry the garment until you're certain every trace of ink is gone.
Fabric-specific notes
Cotton and denim tolerate rubbing alcohol well. Silk and wool are genuinely risky with alcohol-based solvents — they can strip dye and damage the fibre structure, so for a good silk shirt with a pen leak in the pocket, dab very gently and sparingly, or better yet, take it straight to a professional given how easily this one can go wrong on delicate fabric. School uniforms (cotton or poly-blend, usually) are the most common real-world case and handle the alcohol method well.

Common questions
Does hand sanitiser work the same as rubbing alcohol for ink stains?
It can, since most hand sanitiser is largely alcohol-based, but it's usually diluted lower (around 60-70%) and often has added moisturisers or gel thickeners that can leave residue. Proper rubbing alcohol is the more reliable choice if you've got it.
Can I get permanent marker out of a school uniform?
Usually, yes, with patience — the rubbing alcohol method works on most cotton and poly-blend uniforms. It might take a genuinely long dabbing session though, permanent marker doesn't give up in one round.
What if the ink has already gone through a hot wash?
Much harder, and sometimes it's simply set for good at that point. Still worth a proper attempt with the alcohol method left on longer (repeat applications over an hour or so) before accepting it might be permanent.
